Hugo Ayaviri becomes the first Bolivian to climb K2

After a week of climbing, the mountaineer Hugo Ayaviri became the first Bolivian to summit the dreaded K2 mountain (8,611 meters high) without oxygen or the help of sherpas (guides), only with the company of the Belgian Niels Jep, who was also the first from his country to reach the summit.

After conquering the snowy Broad Peak (8,051) last week and also being the first national climber to achieve it, he stayed on the border between China and Pakistan to fulfill the expedition he set out last month: to overcome the K2.

This snowy mountain is the second highest in the world, only behind Everest (8,848), but it is much more complicated to crown it, a clear example of this is that only 450 people did it, while the most famous mountain in the world was climbed by 9,000 people.

How the expedition went

Last Wednesday Ayaviri and Jep began their ascent, which became very complicated as the days went by due to bad weather and strong winds.

In spite of this they went ahead and at 00.30 this Wednesday (09.30 in Pakistan) both reached the summit, an unprecedented event for both of them, especially for the Bolivian, who with his own resources and the support of some people began his journey.

After accomplishing their goal, they descended to camp 3 to rest after the great physical effort they had made. Thanks to this achievement Ayaviri conquered his second "ochomil", a group of mountains over 8,000 meters high in the world.

The French-Bolivian Anne Bialek also traveled to try to complete this expedition, but due to an injury in one of her shoulders, she gave up.
