Mountaineer Hugo Ayaviri became the first Bolivian to reach the summit of the snow-capped Broad Peak, which is 8,051 meters above sea level. The mountain is located between China and Pakistan, and the feat was accomplished on Saturday.
Broad Peak is one of the so-called 'eight-thousanders' as there are '14 eight-thousanders' around the globe, a name given by mountaineers to mountains that are over 8,000 meters above sea level.
Ayaviri and the French-Bolivian Anne Bialek traveled to Asian territory in mid-June to climb the K2 summit directly, but due to the bad weather in that area they opted first to climb Broad Peak.
Due to strong winds their goal was accomplished on the third attempt. "We were the first to reach the summit, 14 hours of hiking to the top opening track," said Ayaviri.
Our compatriot takes this ascent as an incentive to face in the coming hours the challenge of climbing the K2 mountain, which is also located between Pakistan and China, and is 8,611 meters high, one of the most difficult in the world.
It was reported that Bialek will not be able to take part in this expedition, due to a shoulder injury aggravated by the physical exhaustion he suffered in the past few days.
